PARENTAL IMPACT ON SUCCESS AT SCHOOL

 

 

Parents’ involvement in their children’s learning process, is key to improving their abilities, their general knowledge and ultimately their success at school and in their examinations. 

Intelligence, or a child’s ability to absorb facts and synthesize logic, is not simply inherited through genes.  Intelligence is not a matter of straightforward genetics.

A child doesn’t inherit the abilities to persevere and sustain effort in undertaking a piece of work; they are learnt through observation and taught through parental guidance. Outputs are improved and knowledge finessed, when combined with the acquisition of good learning skills.

As tutors, we know that intelligence is not a talent that can be taken for granted. We also understand that success is not dependent on a predetermined scale of ability.  It’s dependent on parents and teachers expecting that the learning capacity of a young student can be enhanced through well-structured, educational stimuli.

Parents who maximise learning facilities to support learning in the home, have a significant impact on developing their child’s performance at school.

Ways in which parents can support learning, include: showing an interest in topics being studied, playing games together, making learning a family activity and encouraging children to take a balanced view about developing their skill set.

There are four key elements that are required by a child, to attain higher than average achievement:  Potential, Motivation, Opportunities & Support.

Parents must support and motivate their offspring, as are the additional opportunities they can provide, for their children to learn, either through their own involvement in their children’s education or by seeking specialist help.

Many students, benefit widely from extra tutoring, whose potential might not be reached in school. Often, they are labelled as slow learners or with learning difficulties. By not being in the top sets, or having missed school due to ill-health, they are disadvantaged in any exam situation.  A tutor can bring out the potential in a child that a school setting passes by because of the numbers being taught and in some cases the lack of technical expertise in the classroom. But, fast learners can also benefit from tutoring as sometimes due to the constraints at school they are not pushed to reach their highest potential. A tutor will personalise their learning. Hard work alone cannot bring success at the highest levels. There must be a baseline level of intelligence, which is measurable, and that’s what we do in our academic assessments. We use the baseline assessment to see what can be achieved given the right home conditions and teaching input. If English is not a first language at home we offer support at a level everyone can grasp.

Assessments help guide future school choices. They identify a child’s potential to settle down in different types of school. A child might have the latent ability, but not the learning style or character, to fit the set-up at some highly academic selective schools. A child like this might be happier in a school with broader opportunities and an emphasis not just on academics but on the well-rounded student.
